At Brampton Cortonwood Infants School, we know that it is important to take pride in our work, so we have adopted a new cursive handwriting scheme. The new cursive style will support our pupils in learning spellings and in developing a neat and legible handwriting style.
In our foundation Stage children practise developing letter shapes and movements. Letters are grouped together and taught in letter families (these are outlined in the link below: Foundation Stage handwriting booklet: A parent’s guide) and children begin to form letters using the ‘pre cursive’ style.
At the beginning of year one, children are introduced to cursive writing. Each letter has a ‘leading flick’ which leads into the next letter. This helps children to prepare for joined up handwriting later on in the year.
Year One and Two
By the second term in year one most children will begin to join their writing. This will be practised throughout the remainder of the year and consolidated in year two.
